computer problems

My computer, the laptop, and I are having a fight. It's winning. I'm beginning to think that there may be a gremlin living in my laptop. I'm thinking it may be a hardware problem, not a virus. The whole laptop gets very hot and then cuts off. Not a good thing. I've been working on it and now I don't have any internet connections for it. I've put it on the FIOS hardwire, and maybe now it might work. I don't know yet.

I'm typing this on my old, old, old computer while I wait for the laptop to boot up. It's taking too long. The monitor I am looking at right now is very old. I'm thinking it's at least 10 years old. Amazingly, it is still in good shape. I've also got an older printer that mostly works, but it's slow. Then there is my laptop, N's laptop, N's old laptop that is not J's laptop, and dh's computer with the flatscreen. I guess that is enough computers for one family. Oh, I have a laser b&w printer (fast!) and dh has a scanner/fax/printer that is b&w AND color. I had another printer that I couldn't get to work (it was a color one) but I got rid of it. I think there is also an OLD laser printer in the garage. Please get rid of that one!!!!

I'm actually thinking that I want a Macbook. I've only seen them a couple of times, but they are impressive. N would love to have one, but I'm not buying any more computers for my kids. They have to buy their own. Bad enough that I buy them games for the Wii and the Xbox 360. I'm starting to hate computers and game systems. But we did get Rock Band on Monday. Oh well, I guess it's something we are stuck with.

I was hoping that my laptop would be better by now, but it doesn't seem to want to work for me yet. Bummer. And if I get a new laptop, will I have to buy all the programs again? That just doesn't seem right somehow! Argh.

My first notebook (in 1992) used to overheat and crash. I had to put it in the freezer to get the thermal switch to reset.

It had a huge hard disk...20MB! A computer-savvy friend told me I would never need any more than that, ever. Turned out he only used DOS, and felt that Windows was a fad that would never catch on.

The poor thing could hold only one application at a time. So every April, I would unload Word and install TurboTax, and couldn't type a letter until the taxes were done! Sheesh.
