Today was about as bad as I thought it would be. My Nursing Research teacher might be slightly crazy. I'm not sure, but I'm not complaining either! She is fun and entertaining and a bit wacky. Likes the South Beach diet. Exercises twice a day. Is in her 60's and is getting a face lift for Christmas. But with 71 people in the class, I think she is just dandy.
What I've decided I really like about my fellow students is that they are all college graduates. It's nice to have a more mature group of classmates. In NOVA this past year most of the students were first time college attendees. I did meet Erin, who was also a BS graduate going back for a nursing degree, but other than that, the rest of the students were taking lots of basic, core classes. Now I'm in classes with engineers, microbiologist, one lawyer, lots of psych majors, some journalist, a couple of political experts and the like. And I think two previously professional musicians. It just makes for a more interesting group of 'mates'.
This evening we had another orientation to J's high school. Tomorrow is N's school orientation. All of this new stuff at once is hard to handle. I rather sit by the pool and chill!
I did get to switch my lab to an earlier time tomorrow, so I can still make it to church on Thursday nights! I'm VERY HAPPY about this. It's an amazing thing, too, because the gal I changes with I 'met' by accident in the ladies room this morning. We were talking about out labs and I mentioned I needed an earlier one and she thought about it for about 20 minutes and then agreed to switch with me. I'm amazed! Bless her!!!
The downside of the day was going over nutrition for infants and the 'recommendations' that all breastfed babies be given Vitamin D supplements at 4 months and iron at 6 months. I so DO NOT agree with this! Vitamin D is fat soluble. The thinking goes that babies don't get it from breastmilk (which IS low in Vit. D) so they need to get it as a supplement. Well, maybe they don't need supplements, maybe they just need to be in the sun a bit every day without SFP 50 sunblock? Or maybe the fat they start to lose a little at around 6 months gives them enough Vit D without adding it. Ugh! And not very many babies need iron supplements if they were born at a healthy weight to begin with. Obviously a mom needs to have excellent nutrition to breastfed a baby and weight loss shouldn't be her primary goal in that time period, but there are so many factors and who is to say what is NEEDED by the baby in the first place? I've seen enough nutrition articles to believe the 'perfect' requirements for any age is still a bit of guesswork.
Don't even get me started on immunization (next week's topics) and fluoride (which they are worried about because moms are using bottled water to mix up formula and so they supposedly need to add floride)!!!
